Flood Emergency Response 2022

Addressing the Catastrophic Impact of Monsoon Floods in Jacobabad, Sindh

Overview of the 2022 Floods:

In 2022, devastating floods triggered by relentless monsoon rains swept through Sindh, with Jacobabad being one of the hardest-hit districts. The floods caused widespread destruction, displacing thousands of families, destroying homes, and disrupting livelihoods.United Action for Human Development (UAHD), a development organization, launched an urgent response to address the immediate needs of the affected communities and support their recovery.

Impact of the 2022 Floods:

  • Over 1,500 homes were destroyed, displacing thousands of families.
  • 70,000 acres of agricultural land were damaged, severely impacting local farmers and threatening food security.
  • More than 50 km of roads were washed away, disrupting transportation and access to essential services.
  • 3 healthcare facilities were damaged, leaving communities without critical medical care.
  • Over 500 livestock were lost, affecting families who relied on animal husbandry for their livelihoods.

United Action for Human Development Organization (UAHD), together with its associates, conducted Rapid Need Assessments (RNA) in the most severely affected Talukas of Thull, Garhi Khairo, and Jacobabad. These assessments provided critical insights into the extent of the damage and helped prioritize the urgent needs of the affected populations. Immediate priorities identified included shelter, food, and clean drinking water, healthcare, and protection services for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and persons with disabilities.

Key Findings:

  1. Shelter: Thousands of families remain without homes, requiring immediate provision of tents, tarpaulins, and emergency shelter materials.
  2. Food and Water: Floodwaters contaminated local water sources and destroyed crops, causing severe food shortages and lack of access to clean drinking water.
  3. Health: Outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea and malaria increased due to stagnant water and poor sanitation. Mobile health units and essential medical supplies were critical to preventing further health crises.
  4. Infrastructure: Damage to roads, bridges, and electricity networks hindered the delivery of aid and isolated communities in need.

Progress and Impact:

Thanks to the generous support of philanthropists, UAHD provided vital aid to thousands of people in Jacobabad, helping them begin to recover from the catastrophic floods. In total, over 13,000 individuals were assisted with cooked meals and clean drinking water.

Continued Efforts for Recovery:

While the immediate relief phase has helped ease the crisis, full recovery will take time. UAHD remains committed to supporting long-term rehabilitation and development, working closely with local communities to rebuild lives and strengthen resilience.

How You Can Help:

Though the emergency response has concluded, the need for recovery persists. Continued support from individuals, partners, and donors is critical to restoring normalcy for flood-affected families in Jacobabad.
